Checks Worth Running Before We Arrive

Find it at the street boundary and close it fully. If water keeps running after that, the fault may sit on the street side, which changes who owns the repair.

Isolate anything near water
If water is heading toward wiring, appliances or light fittings, turn off what you safely can before stepping in.

Protect the hot water unit
If the hot line is the one that let go, turn off the unit's power or gas and close its isolation valve so the tank does not empty through the split.

Drain what is left
Open the lowest cold tap in the house to empty standing water from the pipes once the meter is closed.

Burst Pipe Questions From the Street
How do I shut the water off when a pipe bursts inside a wall?
Find the water meter near the front boundary and turn the valve until the flow stops. That cuts supply to the whole house, including the leaking section in the wall.
Should I also switch off the hot water system?
Yes, if the split is on a hot water line or the tank is leaking. Cut power or gas to the unit first, then close its isolation valve so it does not drain.
Is a burst pipe in a newer estate home handled differently?
Usually, yes. Newer estates run copper or plastic supply lines with accessible manifolds, so a single damaged section can be cut out and replaced without touching the rest of the run.
Can ground movement really crack a water pipe?
It can. The suburb's reactive clay swells and shrinks with the seasons, and decades of that flexing works old joints and rigid runs until a weak spot finally lets go.
Will tape or a clamp hold the pipe until help arrives?
Not for long. Water under pressure finds a way past any temporary patch, so a clamp only buys minutes. Treat the job as done once the line is properly cut back and rejoined.
